The challenge for Dublin Airport

Despite extensive protection being in place, a major lightning strike at Dublin Airport caused catastrophic damage to its contingency transmitters. This rendered the backup ground-to-air system inoperable.

The airport was still functional but, in the event of any problems with its main system, it would have had to close down.

The Northrop Grumman solution

As part of its maintenance contract with Dublin Airport, Northrop Grumman provides a 30-day repair guarantee. In this case however, it was clear to the Northrop Grumman Customer Support team that this timescale would not be suitable for such a critical event.
